What should I expect during physiotherapy sessions?
Do I need a referral from my doctor before attending Physiotherapy?
In Ontario, you can directly access physiotherapy services without a doctor’s referral, as physiotherapists are recognized as primary care providers. You can book an appointment directly for assessment and treatment, although private insurance providers may still require a referral for reimbursement, and OHIP-funded clinics have specific eligibility criteria.

How often will I need to attend physiotherapy sessions?
The frequency of visits will depend on your individual goals and condition, but typically it is recommended that patients attend 2-3 times per week for a minimum of 4-6 weeks in order to maximize results. Your therapist will provide more details during your initial appointment.

What is Physiotherapy?
The Canadian Physiotherapy Association describes physiotherapy as “… understanding how and why movement and function take place. Physiotherapists are highly skilled and autonomous health professionals who provide safe, quality, client-centered physiotherapy through a commitment to service availability, accessibility and excellence.”
What this means is we are the movement experts. We promote mobility and independent function. We are trained in assessing and treating dysfunction in the joints, nerves and muscles to help you improve pain, restore mobility, improve strength, and reach your functional goals as quickly as possible.
Will Physiotherapy Help my Problem?
If you have back or neck pain, we can help. If you have pelvic pain or incontinence, we can help. If you have a sports injury or have sprained your ankle, we can help. If you’re unsure if we can help your particular problem, give us a call to discuss.
At Elevation Physiotherapy and Wellness, we pride ourselves on being able to help those people who have been elsewhere and tried other avenues. We want the opportunity to work with you to see how it can be different.
Does Insurance Cover Physiotherapy?
If you have extended health benefits or have been injured in a car accident, you will likely be partially or entirely covered for physiotherapy. Extended health benefits vary by plan, so check the details of your individual coverage.
Do I Need a Referral from my Doctor?
No. Individuals in Ontario have direct access to physiotherapy, but some extended health benefit plans may require a physician’s referral in order for reimbursement of the costs. Extended health benefits vary by plan, so check the details of your individual coverage.
How Long is Each Session and How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Your first visit will take approximately 1 hour, and follow-up sessions are 30 minutes. All appointments are one-on-one with your Physiotherapist.
The number of sessions you will need depends on your own situation. There are many, many factors that will help us determine how often you’ll need to be seen: how intense your pain is, how long you’ve had the problem, does the pain refer into a limb, muscle strength, and the cause of the injury to name a few. We want to know your goals so that we can get you there as quickly as possible.
What Happens at my First Appointment?
At your initial visit to Elevation Physiotherapy and Wellness, your physiotherapist will listen to your story and ask questions to get a complete history, and conduct a thorough physical assessment. This will be immediately followed by treatment so that you can start to notice changes at the first visit.
Treatment will vary depending on your own situation, and may involve education on your injury and how to initiate recovery, manual therapy (hands on treatment), modalities (acupuncture, heat) and an exercise program.
How Quickly Can I Be Seen for my First Appointment?
We open early and close late on most days – we will try very hard to accommodate your schedule for you to start with us within 48 hours of calling.
